Sky Properties gives input into GM Waste Development strategy
Sky Properties gave evidence at the hearing into the emerging Greater Manchester Waste Development Document in June.
Evidence was presented on the need for waste facilities and in particular the need for a significant increase in the capacity available for waste recovery, whether in the form of recycling or energy recovery.
The Plan establishes that there is a need for up to 5 new energy recovery facilities across Greater Manchester and Sky Properties welcomed this commitment but also argued that the Plan could be more ambitious and divert even more waste from landfill.
In this context Sky Properties then gave evidence arguing that the Plan should identify the former Mitchell Shackleton site as a strategic waste allocation.
The Plan currently identifies only two sites for the full range of waste facilities including energy recovery and one of those sites is relatively small.
More sites will clearly be needed and as the former Mitchell Shackleton site scored as well as any other site in the Plan's environmental site assessments, then the Plan would be more robust if the site is allocated.
It is expected that the Inspector will report towards the end of 2011 and that the Plan will be adopted early in 2012.
